Bayern Munich underwent to an unexpected 3-2 defeat to Mainz at the Coface Arena to surrender the league leadership to rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Van Buyten came to salvation, however, as in the 79th minute he gave the Bavarians hope with another goal, following a delightful pass by Kroos. However, it was too little, too late and the game finished 3-2.
